Matthew Garrity was born about 1853
in New York. Matthew was the son of
Patrick Garrity
and Catherine Glinnen of Smithville (Victory
Mills), New York. Patrick and Catherine Garrity left their
native parish of Shrule in County Longford and came to America
in about 1847, where they joined other Irish Catholic
families at Victory, Saratoga County, New York. Patrick soon
established a grist mill at the base of the dam on the Fish
River which flows between Schuylerville and Victory Mills. He
operated the mill for many years. The Garrity family lived at
Smithville (Victory Mills), New York. Matthew Garrity married
