Mayo Pond was a prominent Schuylerville, New York
resident who served as town supervisor in 1845. Thomas Ustis, age 24,
first appears on the 1855 New York State census of
Schuylerville working as a servant in the home of Mayo Pond. For
the next three decades, Mayo Pond figured prominently in the
affairs of the Eustis family as employer and estate
administrator. The following is what we know of Mayo Pond.
On the 3rd of July 1827,
Mayo Pond, Charles Morgan and John T. Morgan became incorporated
by the name of the Amoskeag Fire Engine Company No. 1 in
Goffstown, New Hampshire. The company was allowed to hold real
and personal estate to the value of $1,000.

At an unknown date, prior
to 1836, Mayo Pond had relocated to Schuylerville, Saratoga
County, NY. He was named Captain of the village’s earliest fire
department. Prior to 1836, fires were fought with a “bucket
brigade.” Each citizen owning a house worth $500 or more was
required to keep two buckets bearing their initials in a
convenient place in the home. When an alarm was given each
householder was required to appear at the scene of the fire with
his buckets filled with water. The village of Schuylerville
purchased a fire engine in 1836. William Carroll was one of 32
firemen listed on the roster of the first fire company. Source:
The Story of Old Saratoga (1901). William Carroll was
married to two different women named Bridget Eustace; his second
wife being a niece of the first Bridget. When William Carroll
died at Schuylerville in 1856, Mayo Pond was one of two men
responsible for his estate.
In 1845,
Mayo Pond was supervisor of the town of Saratoga, commonly known
as Old Saratoga, to distinguish it from the larger and better
known town of Saratoga Springs. Mayo Pond died at Schuylerville
on April 17, 1860.
